Images of the road cuts on I. 75 west of Jellico, Tennessee. These capture exposures of Pennsylvanian Pottsville Formation quartzarenites that accumulated on flood tide delta lobes and tidal channels.

Stop 1: Tennessee, Interstate 75; 16 miles from Jellico and the highway to Jellico

Facies: Sheets, lenses and channel fill of flood tidal shoals composed of Quartzarenite (sandstone);
Age: Base of Pennsylvanian
Description: Sandstone representing back barrier islands or offshore bars reworked on their landward side by the flood tides. Some pebbles are collecting as well which suggest that there is nearby river source. One mile up road are cut-and-fill features developed in uniform sheets characterized by cross-beds, which may indicate a flood delta depositional setting. Two miles ahead are shales that represent a lagoonal setting.

Unless indicated otherwise the images on this page were photographed by Christopher Kendall using a digital Nicon Coolpix camera.
