Cliffs at Kilcredaun Light House - Ross Formation - Deepwater Fan Lobe Sheets, Channels & Local Small Slumps

This page represents a gallery of photographs that illustrate the geology of the Ross Formation where it outcrops in the Cliffs at Kilcredaun Light House along the shore north of the Shannon Estuary. These cliffs are to the east of the cliffs at Rehy and south of the village of Carrigaholt.

The photographs in this gallery were taken by Christopher Kendall, and Peter Haughton. We extend our special thanks to Geoff McGee, the skipper of the Draiocht that sails from Carrigaholt harbour on the northern flank of the Shannon Estuary in Co-Clare and who transported us to many of the different localities featured in our photographs. We hope you enjoy the results of our collaboration and the various photographs of the Ross Formation sediments in the Cliffs at Kilcredaun Light House and in the rocky shore line to the east.

The gallery illustrates the character of the deepwater sediments of the Ross Formation. Here the Ross Formation section is expressed by deepwater fan lobes with sparse shallow channeling (some mud filled), megaflutes and some local slumping and dewatering structures.
