043-Punta-Negra-Sig.gif

043 Late Miocene Punta Negra North, Mallorca , Spain Coral zonation and sigmoid boundaries. The boundaries are erosion surfaces. Coral colonies are dish-shaped (deeper water) at the base, passing upwards to branching shape. The erosion surface at top truncates the branching corals and is overlain by massive (shallow water) corals. The vertical shift of these coral morphology zones allows for estimation of sea-level fluctuation on a fourth-magnitude sea-level cycle (= 7th order). Scale in picture (Pomar, 1991; Pomar, 1994; Pomar & Ward , 1994)
