This is upper segment of the basin floor fan proper. It is just down slope from the toe of slope channels and their associated coarser sediment (Beaubouef et al, 1999). Erosion of canyons into the slope and the updip incision of fluvial valleys into the shelf feed the sediment that are spread out over the fan proper. This portion of the basin-floor fan has a flattened surface that is usually channelled. Traced seaward the basin floor fan further divided into mid fan and distal fan.
